Set up a USB drive for Dashcam & Sentry Mode

Start with the drive requirements, connect it to a data-capable port, then verify a saved clip before relying on the setup.

1. Check the drive specifications

• At least 64 GB capacity.
• At least 4 MB/s sustained write speed, rather than a peak-speed claim.
• USB 2.0 compatibility, including when choosing a USB 3.0 drive.

2. Choose the right connection

The front compartment’s USB ports are on its rear wall. Rear passenger ports supply power only. Tesla also advises against connecting several devices through a USB hub because recognition can fail. Source: Interior Electronics.

3. Format and prepare it

If available, choose Controls → Safety → Format USB Drive. The car prepares exFAT storage and the required folders. Formatting requires a drive with no more than one partition.

Alternatively, format as exFAT on a computer and create a folder named TeslaCam at the drive’s top level. NTFS is not supported. Reconnect it to a front data port and allow a few seconds for recognition. Source: USB requirements.

4. Verify a recording

1. Enable Dashcam under Controls → Safety → Dashcam, where available. Check its recording status.
2. Save a short test clip using the Dashcam control. Automatic event detection does not guarantee every incident will be saved.
3. While parked, open the Dashcam viewer and play the saved clip. Check that it shows the event you intended to retain.
4. Pause Dashcam before removing the drive. Keep a separate copy of important footage.

5. Enable Sentry Mode separately

Preparing a drive does not switch on Sentry Mode. Enable it for monitoring while the car is locked and parked. Its operation depends on configuration and software; it can consume additional power and is unavailable in Low Power Mode under current guidance. Source: Sentry Mode.

If something does not work

Our suggested diagnostic order: note the exact message, check the connection, confirm the drive meets the requirements, then review its format. Back up existing clips before trying another format. If a second compatible drive also fails, record the software version and error for service support.

This is a documentation-based guide. We have not yet tested a specific drive on our project car, so no brand is presented as personally verified.
