When phone key fails: use the key card
The key card is your essential backup when your phone is unavailable, out of power, or not connecting over Bluetooth.
Keep it with you: Tesla recommends always carrying a key card as a backup. This guide focuses on the 2019 US Model 3.
Unlock and drive
- Hold the card flat against the card reader on the driver-side door pillar. Keep it there for one or two seconds if needed.
- After entering, press the brake pedal within two minutes.
- If the two-minute window expires, place the card on the center-console reader behind the cup holders, then press the brake again.
Pair a replacement card
- On the touchscreen, open Controls › Locks › Keys › Add Key.
- Scan the new card on the center-console reader.
- Scan an already paired key to confirm. Give the new key a clear name in the key list.
If a key is lost
Open Controls › Locks and remove the missing key using an authenticated key. If you cannot access the car with any authenticated key, contact Tesla service.
