Best storage for Tesla Sentry Mode
Prioritize endurance and sustained writes over headline transfer speed. Tesla requires at least 64 GB, at least 4 MB/s sustained write speed and USB 2.0 compatibility.
SSD, flash drive or endurance card?

Capacity: how much is useful?
Tesla's minimum is 64 GB. More capacity gives saved footage additional room and can spread repeated writes over more flash memory. Tesla says recent footage may cover roughly one hour on smaller drives and up to 24 hours on drives of 1 TB or more before continuous footage is overwritten.
- 64–128 GB: minimum-cost setup; requires more frequent housekeeping.
- 256–512 GB: a sensible middle range for most owners.
- 1 TB: useful for frequent Sentry events, long trips or owners who archive clips less often.
Capacity does not replace backups. Old Sentry clips can be deleted automatically when space becomes limited, and important footage should be copied promptly.
Buying checklist
- Confirm at least 64 GB and a documented sustained write speed of 4 MB/s or more.
- Choose storage designed for repeated writes, not occasional file transfer.
- Check the operating-temperature range for a parked car.
- Make sure the device and any cable fit securely in the glovebox or data-capable port.
- Confirm USB 2.0 backward compatibility.
- Prefer a clear warranty from an established manufacturer and seller.
Connection rules by Model 3 generation
Current Model 3 guidance directs owners to the USB-A data port in the glovebox. Some older cars use a front center-console data port. Rear USB ports—and some center-console USB-C ports on later vehicles—are charging-only and cannot save Dashcam footage.
Format and test before relying on it
- Back up any existing files.
- Insert the drive into the car's data-capable port.
- Use Controls → Safety → Format USB Drive when available.
- Save a short Dashcam clip and play it back while parked.
- Check several camera angles and repeat the test after the car has been parked in hot or cold weather.
When to replace the drive
Investigate repeated unavailable-camera icons, corrupted clips, failed formatting, disappearing storage or a drive that becomes excessively hot. First back up readable footage, reseat the connection and test a second compatible drive before assuming the car requires service.
