Best home charger for a Tesla Model 3
The best charger is the least expensive safe setup that replenishes your normal driving before the next trip. For many owners, that is either a Mobile Connector on an approved 240-volt outlet or a hardwired Wall Connector.

Compare the three Tesla options
Tesla currently lists its Mobile Connector with a 20-foot cable and its wall units with 24-foot cables. Tesla's published maximum estimates are 3ā30 miles of range per hour for the Mobile Connector and up to 44 miles per hour for the wall units, but the actual rate depends on the car, circuit and configuration.
For a Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive, Tesla says the Mobile Connector and Wall Connector share the same 32-amp maximum charge rate. In that case, the permanent installation, cable handling, app features and future vehicle plans may matter more than peak speed.
Start with daily energy, not maximum amperage
- Estimate the miles you normally drive on a busy day.
- Multiply by your observed energy use in kWh per mile.
- Divide the required energy by the hours the car is parked.
- Add a reasonable margin for charging losses and occasional extra driving.
- Ask a licensed electrician what the existing service and panel can safely support.
A 120-volt household outlet may cover a short commute if the car remains plugged in overnight. A suitable 240-volt circuit is much more flexible. Installing the largest possible circuit is not automatically necessary or economical.
Hardwired unit or receptacle?
A Wall Connector is hardwired and avoids a plug-and-receptacle connection that is repeatedly carrying a long-duration load. A Mobile Connector adds portability and can avoid new equipment installation when a qualified electrician approves an existing outlet and circuit. Local code, GFCI requirements, weather exposure and the condition of the electrical system affect the correct choice.
Questions to ask before buying
- What is the car's onboard AC charging limit?
- How long is the cable route from the panel to the parking position?
- Will the connector reach the charge port without crossing a walkway?
- Is the installation indoors or exposed to weather?
- Could a second EV require J1772 compatibility or power sharing?
- Does the utility offer an EV rate, rebate or approved-equipment list?
Our practical verdict
Existing approved 240-volt outlet: start by pricing the Mobile Connector against a hardwired installation. New circuit and long-term ownership: the Wall Connector is usually the cleaner permanent solution. Mixed-EV household: consider the Universal Wall Connector before installing adapters into the daily routine.
