What your charge port light is telling you
Read both the color and the pattern. A steady light and a blinking light can mean different things.
This guide describes the light at the carâs charging inlet. Lights on a Mobile Connector or Wall Connector have their own instructions.
The colors at a glance
| Color | Pattern | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| White / light blue | Steady | Port open: ready to connect, or connector unlocked. |
| Blue | Steady | Connected, but not charging; a schedule may be active. |
| Blue | Blinking | Car and charger are communicating before charging starts. |
| Green | Blinking | Charging is underway. |
| Green | Steady | Charging is complete. |
| Amber | Steady | Connector is not fully seated. |
| Amber | Blinking | AC charging is running at reduced current. |
| Red | Steady | A fault has interrupted or prevented charging. |
Blue does not necessarily mean a problem
For a scheduled session, waiting can be expected. To charge now, Tesla suggests selecting Start Charging on the touchscreen or in the app, or disabling the schedule. Tesla status-light guide.
Amber or red: check before leaving
For steady amber, realign and fully insert the connector. For red, read the touchscreen alert first. It gives more context than the color alone. Unlock the connector before removing it; do not force it out. Tesla charging instructions.
Teslaâs troubleshooting guide recommends checking for obstructions if the seating issue persists, then trying another cable if none are found. For recurring faults, follow the specific alert and the charging equipmentâs instructions. Tesla status-light guide.
What if the light is off?
The light can turn off after the car is locked and has been sleeping. Unlocking the car or pressing the charging-handle button can show its status again. Darkness alone does not establish that charging has stopped. Tesla status-light guide.
For an imported US car
This color reference is not an adapter-compatibility check. If the carâs inlet has been modified, document that separately before following connector-specific advice.
