How to check Model 3 battery health without guessing

A lower displayed range does not automatically mean the battery has lost the same percentage of usable capacity. Separate estimates, real-world efficiency, charging behavior, and actual fault signals.

What displayed range can tell you

The car can show remaining energy as a percentage or estimated distance. That distance is not a laboratory capacity measurement. Cold weather, speed, elevation, wind, cabin heating, tire pressure, wheels, payload, and recent consumption all affect real driving range.

A useful check asks two different questions: how much energy appears available, and how efficiently the car uses it. Mixing them creates false alarms.

Five checks to start with

  1. Read the alerts. Check the touchscreen and Tesla app for battery, charging, thermal, or low-voltage warnings. Follow the alert text first.
  2. Check the charge limit. Confirm charging reaches the limit set in Controls → Charging without repeatedly stopping or producing an alert.
  3. Compare similar trips. Record distance, start and end charge, temperature, route, speed, and average consumption. Compare several similar trips.
  4. Review parked loss. Account for Sentry Mode, cabin protection, app wake-ups, cold conditions, and other active systems.
  5. Review service history. Repairs, persistent warnings, and repeat visits matter more than a verbal range estimate.

Build a useful trip log

Record date, temperature, route, distance, starting charge, ending charge, and average Wh/mi or Wh/km. Repeat the same route under similar conditions. A single trip is noisy; a consistent change across comparable trips is more meaningful.

Two trips that each use 20% are not equivalent if one is a slow summer commute and the other is a cold highway drive with cabin heat. Percentage alone does not establish degradation.

Official Battery Health Test

Some vehicles and software versions offer Battery Health Test under Controls → Service. If it appears, read every on-screen requirement. The procedure may take many hours, requires suitable AC charging, and can discharge the high-voltage battery very low while vehicle features are unavailable.

Use the official result as one piece of evidence. Availability and instructions vary by vehicle, battery, software, and region; the directions displayed in the car take priority.

Signals that deserve service attention

Safety first: never open, probe, lift against, or attempt to repair a high-voltage battery. If there is smoke, unusual heat, odor, or impact damage, move away when safe and contact emergency or roadside assistance as appropriate.

Does cold weather permanently reduce the displayed range?

Cold can temporarily reduce available energy and increase consumption. Tesla notes that part of the battery display may appear blue when energy is temporarily unavailable because the battery is cold.

Is a lower range estimate proof of degradation?

No. Compare similar trips and consumption, check alerts, and use the official test or service process when available.

Should the car remain plugged in?

Tesla recommends leaving Model 3 plugged in when it is not in use. Follow the daily and trip charge-limit guidance shown by your particular vehicle or app.

When should I schedule service?

For persistent alerts, repeat charging failures, inability to reach the selected limit, or a repeatable unexplained change after obvious factors are excluded.
