Why your Model 3 uses more energy in winter
Start with conditions and consumption before drawing conclusions about battery health.
What changes in the cold?
Driving, cabin heating, and battery heating can require more energy. Cold batteries can limit regenerative braking. A blue snowflake means some stored energy is temporarily unavailable until the battery warms.
Prepare before departure
- Warm the cabin through Climate in the app; the battery also warms as needed.
- Leave the car connected when possible while parked, allowing the charging system to support battery warming.
- Use a comfortable, lower cabin setting with seat heating. Keep windows clear.
- When supported, use Trip Planner to navigate to a Tesla charger for battery preparation.

Make the morning routine repeatable
On supported software, open Controls → Schedule, choose the location, and set when you want preconditioning completed. The car calculates when to start. Charging and preconditioning are separate settings; configure both if needed.

How much range will you lose?
We have not measured our project car in winter yet. A single percentage would imply precision we cannot support.
A calculation, not a road test
Assume a 45 kWh driving-energy budget. At 15 kWh per 100 km, that gives 300 km. At 20 kWh per 100 km, it gives 225 km.
In this example, consumption increases by one-third while distance falls by one-quarter. The percentages differ because their starting values differ. These are invented inputs for explaining the arithmetic, not battery specifications or a trip plan; no safety reserve is included.
Compare your own trips
Our suggested record: temperature, route, distance, average consumption, cabin setting, preconditioning, and starting and ending charge percentages. Compare similar journeys before interpreting one unusual reading.
If a battery or charging alert appears, follow that message rather than attributing it to winter.
